Can Matcha help you lose weight? The simple answer is yes! But how?
Almost half of British adults have been on a diet each year, which sounds like quite a large percentage. But when you consider that over 60% of adults are classified as overweight or obese, it’s unsurprising. The facts are we consume way too many wonderful tasting things that are not so wonderful to our body. Dieting can be very hard, beating sugar cravings, weighing and calculating food intake, constantly surrounded by temptation and bad influences… The real answers to losing weight and maintaining a healthy body is discipline and education. There is no real quick fix and easy way out, like most worthwhile endeavours in life, it’s hard work.
But that does not mean that there aren’t some ways you can assist the process of losing weight and maintain your desired weight after your gruelling diet is done with. Some of you may know about the benefits of green tea for weight loss and maintenance, but Matcha green tea is a different beast entirely.
The secret to Matcha weight loss is thermogenesis and its level of polyphenol compounds called catechins. Now that sounds interesting but what on earth am I talking about? Thermogenesis is when your body temperature raises, such as during exercise, which increases your metabolism. When this increase occurs, your body breaks down food faster and burns through your body's stored fat and sugars at a very high right. Your body's regular thermogenesis is 8-10%, however, consuming Matcha boosts your thermogenesis rate to an impressive rate of 35-40%.
Catechins are antioxidants found in tea, cacao, berries and coffee. Catechins play a role in protecting your body from free radicals that harm your body, such as heart disease and cancer. Catechins also increase the amount of energy your body uses and helps your body burn away excess body fate. Green tea catechins are especially great at helping you lose fat from your abdominal area. Yes, they are gut busters! Also, green tea catechins are more effective at promoting weight loss than catechins found in other foods.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition conducted a study comparing the effects of catechin levels in tea. They divided a group of 35 Japanese men with the same BMI and waist size in two; one group were given a bottle of tea containing 690mg of catechins and the other group were given a bottle containing 22mg of catechins. They discovered that the men who consumed the tea with 690mg of catechins had significantly lower BMI, body weight and waste size compared to the group that consumed 22mg of catechins (over a 12 week period). The conclusion was straight forward, consuming 690mg of catechins for 12 weeks enabled the men to lose weight. On average Matcha contains 137x more catechins than regular green tea, making it a great weight loss aid.
